English Learner Program

Anderson Community School’s English Learner (EL) Program advocates for all multilingual learners. We are committed to fostering the acquisition of English language skills necessary for the full transition and participation into the academic and social school community. We are dedicated to upholding their languages and cultures as assets to our classrooms and schools. Anderson Community Schools abides by all Federal and State guidelines and policies.

Goals of ENL
Anderson Community School’s EL program is committed to the educational advancement of its EL students, both academically and socially, in English while honoring their rich heritage of language and culture.

1. To teach English for specific academic purposes so language can be applied to academic contexts to maximize student achievement.
2. To provide opportunities for students to grow socially through their home school and community.
3. To enable students to construct meaning through appropriate instructional strategies.
4. To provide administrators, teachers and staff with innovative professional development to maximize student achievement.
5. To provide English Language learners with highly qualified EL-licensed teachers.
6. To provide parent communication in parent’s native language to the extent possible.

WIDA English Language Development Standards
The district's EL program uses the WIDA English Language Development (ELD) Standards Framework aligned with the Indiana Academic Standards. The WIDA Standards Framework frame the integration of content and language and how language is used in the learning process. This is the foundation of curriculum, instruction, and assessment for EL students. More information regarding WIDA can be accessed by clicking here
