Paraeducator Qualification Notice

In accordance with Indiana Department of Education guidelines, all paraeducators employed in Indiana public schools must meet the highly qualified requirement. This can be satisfied by either:
  • Holding an associate degree (or higher),
  • Completing at least two years of college (roughly 60 credit hours), or
  • Passing the ParaPro Assessment.
However, the State of Indiana allows school districts to request a waiver of this requirement under specific circumstances. Anderson Community Schools utilizes this waiver option on a limited basis, when appropriate, to ensure we are meeting the needs of our students and staffing classrooms with qualified, capable individuals.

To be considered for employment under this waiver, individuals must complete all required professional development modules and training as designated by the school corporation. Paraeducators employed under a waiver will also receive additional oversight and support to ensure success in their roles.

For questions regarding paraeducator qualifications or the waiver process, please contact Paraeducator Coordinator Scott Merkel, or Federal Grants Director Pam Storm.
