Hacks, phishing attacks, spoofs: these are all terms for attacks on email accounts.
IF YOU ARE A VICTIM: Change your password. This may or may not help but it won't hurt! (How to change your password.)

Be aware that Google may suspend your account for 24 hours if you (or more likely, your hacker) exceeds your email limit.
IF YOU WANT TO AVOID BEING A VICTIM:~NEVER NEVER NEVER open an attachment or follow a web link in an email if you are not 100% sure it is legitimate.
~Look for MISSPELLINGS, ODD STYLE OF LANGUAGE, ODD CONTENT, ETC.
~If something looks amiss it probably is.
~DELETE THE EMAIL if it looks suspicious to you.
