START PLANNING NOW FOR COLLEGE

We have found that colleges and other post-secondary institutions have different requirements for students with disabilities to receive accommodations. For the most part we are finding that students who plan to attend college should have re-testing (as opposed to the waiver or Re-Evaluation/Summary Plan) completed at some point during their high school years. Many colleges require that students with cognitive/learning disabilities have been tested within 3 years prior to attending college; some are okay with testing within the last 5 years. Students with an emotional disability may need re-tested during their senior year. Please investigate the schools you are interested in early and find out what their specific requirements are.

Additional information can be obtained from these web sites:

This document does an excellent job of explaining the differences between high school special education and adjustments provided in college.

Students who plan to attend college will need to take the SAT and/or ACT. Both testing services require advance application for accommodations.
